Memorial Day Hymn Sing

For more than 40 years, Harderwyk Church has held the tradition of a hymn sing on Memorial Day weekend. Join us again this year as we give gratitude to God for the blessing of freedom we enjoy in our country. Leading the hymn sing this year will be song leader, James De Jong along with accompanists, Jane Bosko and Fred Van Dyke. Our special guest will be The Lake Affect Choir. This will be an evening you will not want to miss!

Sunday, June 10 – 4:00 pm
Join us for a toe tapping afternoon of gospel music… with a bit of a southern flavor!  “Ah! Men”, is a quartet of four men who have sung in the West Michigan area over the past year and most recently for the Holland Tulip Festival.  Singers include Jim De Jong, Gary Gramer, Jeff Peerbolt and Roger Allen.  Don’t miss an afternoon with “Ah! Men”, Jane Bosko and friends in the Harderwyk sanctuary on June 10.  A free will offering will be taken in support of the Harderwyk music fund.

Char Ekster is looking for people to join her on team “Journey” in the “Relay For Life” at West Ottawa High School on June 15 & 16. Anyone who is interested in participating in this event can contact Char or sign up on the “Relay For Life” website.  It is a relay so come and run or walk the distance YOU feel comfortable in doing.

Children’s Ministry

Children’s Summer Schedule begins Today:  During the summer months, elementary-age children are invited to join their families for worship.  Worship activity bags are available at all services, and children’s bulletins will also be available for elementary children during the summer.   Preschool age classes (Turtles and Horses) will continue through the summer, but in a simplified format and in some cases, as part of the nursery ministry.

Kid Connect 2012 is seeking volunteers to serve as small group leaders, craft helpers, student leaders, and nursery attendants.  Kid Connect is a four-night discipleship event for preschool and elementary children.  It is June 18 – 21, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  If you’d like to be involved, contact Beth Jewett (x307) or Christine MacDonald (x319)

Missions

The Mission Committee would like to shout out a Big THANK YOU to all of the participants and sponsors of our 9^th Annual Miles for Missions 5/10k Run.  With all of your help and support we were able to raise almost $5,000.00 toward missions here at Harderwyk! The top three men participants in the 5K were: Jim Koeman, Shawn Sluis, and Chris Essenburg.  The top three women participants in the 5K were: Hannah Gerrits, Linda Overway, and Lacy VanKampen.  The top three men participants in the 10K were: Colin Mulder, Tim Diekema, and Jose Santos.  The top three women participants in the 10K were: Stacie VanKampen, Andrea Nieto, and tied for third were Shanna Meyer and Kathy Mitchell.

Announcements

Council Update: The Fusion CLT has recommended that Harderwyk Council hire Rev. Dominic Palacios on a contractual basis, with the hopes of starting in June 2012, to be the primary Preaching and Shepherding Pastor of the Fusion community in an interim capacity.  Council has affirmed this recommendation and will proceed with the necessary next steps.
Council is offering a time of discussion immediately following Fusion’s service on Sunday, May 20 in the Sanctuary to dialogue and answer questions regarding this interim position. All Harderwyk members are invited to participate in this discussion.
The Fusion community will be asked to affirm the recommendation.  Ballots will be available and can be submitted after the meeting Sunday, May 20 and on Sunday, May 27. Absentee ballots would need to be dropped off in the white Drop Boxes or in the church office on or before Sunday May, 27.
Please continue to be in prayer as we seek God’s leading and direction for His church.

AMP Touch (electronic check-in) is up and running for all congregations.  Please use the system to check-in every child from birth through 5^th grade who is attending a children’s class, or going to nursery.  If you have not yet registered with the system, you may do so in the Wave room (for Watershed) or at the lower level Touch Kiosk (for Fusion and Celebration).

Teachers Needed in Central Africa:  Rain Forest International School (RFIS) (Cameroon) exists so that missionaries can fulfill their God-given tasks in Central Africa confident that their children’s educational needs are being met. However, in the coming school year, RFIS will find it particularly difficult to accomplish this goal as they are experiencing an extreme teacher shortage. Western Theological Seminary is seeking volunteers to serve breakfast at the Seminary, in downtown Holland, once every other month on Sunday mornings from 8:30-11:00. It would require a happy, serving heart, a smile on your face, and a helping hand! We set the tables, serve coffee, juice, bananas and baked goods, make eggs and sausage. You can feel free to mingle with the people who come for a warm breakfast if you desire. Vacuuming and cleaning will wrap it all up. Lakesiders is a Bible study fellowship for older folk. All are welcome. On Thursday morning, beginning at 9:30, we will share refreshments, visit, and from 10 to 11 conclude our study of the minor prophets. The prophecy of Zechariah will be our focus. If you are able, read the book of Zechariah before we meet.

Lakesiders Outing: Save Thursday, May 24 for a guided WALKING TOUR  of the VanAndel Institute in Grand Rapids. Learn about and see the research going on to find cures for many common diseases.  Cost ? Kid Connect 2012 is seeking volunteers to serve as small group leaders, craft helpers, student leaders, and nursery attendants.  Kid Connect is a four-night discipleship event for preschool and elementary children.  It is June 18 – 21, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  If you’d like to be involved, contact Beth Jewett (x307) or Christine MacDonald (x319)

Lunchtime Communion Q & A – Make Your Reservations by Thursday!  Parents of children through 5^th grade are invited to a lunch Q & A session about children and communion on Sunday, May 20 at 12:15.  Lunch will be provided, but reservations are required by Thursday, May 17.  Children are welcome for lunch and will have supervised activities during the Q & A session.  For reservations, contact Christine MacDonald (928-0319 ).

AMP Touch Check-in for Children’s Ministry:   The new check-in system is “live” for all congregations this week.  All children birth through 5^th should be checked into their classes using the one of the AMP Touch Kiosks; the old sign-in sheets, clip-on name tags and laminated pick-up cards are no longer in use.  If you have not registered to use the AMP Touch system, please stop at the Welcome Kiosk for instructions about checking-in.

Kid Connect Registration begins today!  Kid Connect is a summer discipleship event for children.  The dates are June 18 – 21 (6:00 – 8:00pm)  This year, our theme is HMS Rescue: Lost at Sea!  Go to harderwyk.com to register online.  Kid Connect is open to children born in 2008 through children entering 5th grade in September 2012.

Missions

Our 9^th annual Miles for Missions Run/Walk is Saturday, May 19, 2012, beginning at 9:00 am.  If you are a runner, walker, jogger with stroller or somewhere in between, come and join us while supporting our missions both across the ocean and across the street.  There is also a Kids Fun Run (1K) at 8:30 am-before the main Run/Walk begins.  Pick up your registration form for this event at one of the mission centers.  You can leave the completed form with payment in the provided white drop boxes or bring to the office.

The Honduras Mission Team is seeking donations to purchase 11^th grade Beka Geometry Books for Abundant Life Christian School in LaUnion.  24 books are needed for the 11^th grade classroom that the team will be working on this summer.  Each book costs $29.15, also needed are a teachers edition ($53.50) and a solution key ($66.50).  If you are able to help by making a donation to cover the cost of any of the above books please complete a donation form, found at the information center, and place in the white drop boxes. Teachers Needed in Central Africa:  Rain Forest International School (RFIS) (Cameroon) exists so that missionaries can fulfill their God-given tasks in Central Africa confident that their children’s educational needs are being met. However, in the coming school year, RFIS will find it particularly difficult to accomplish this goal as they are experiencing an extreme teacher shortage. Western Theological Seminary is seeking volunteers to serve breakfast at the Seminary, in downtown Holland, once every other month on Sunday mornings from 8:30-11:00. It would require a happy, serving heart, a smile on your face, and a helping hand! We set the tables, serve coffee, juice, bananas and baked goods, make eggs and sausage. You can feel free to mingle with the people who come for a warm breakfast if you desire. Vacuuming and cleaning will wrap it all up. Great Escape Day Camp:  Need a place for your K-7^th grade child to have fun, active days with other kids?  The Great Escape Day camp offers 10 weeks of summer care, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Camp opens Monday, June 11 and the last day will be Friday, August 17.   Then immediately following the end of the Great Escape, on August 20-24, is the annual Great Rhythm Stampede, a music and movement camp for kids entering 1^st – 5^th grades.  Information is available around campus and online at www.neighborsplus.org.  Come for a day, a week or the whole summer!

Safe Church Team: Classis Holland is working with Classis Zeeland to form a joint “Safe Church Team.” The work of the team will be to promote safety and security in our churches. This is to include promotion of policies, training, resources and education in risk management and in abuse prevention and response. Lakesiders: Thursday morning, May 17, we will continue our study of the minor prophets focusing on prophecy of Zechariah. What messages was God giving his people in the eight night visions experienced by Zechariah (1:7-6:8).  Chapters 9 through 14 are considered some of the most difficult to understand of all the minor prophecies.  Three passages from these chapters are quoted in the New Testament.  How do these quotes help us understand?

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets May 7, at 7 pm in the library!  So far, 26 shawls or blankets have been delivered to people in our congregation.  Join our group to knit or crochet and pray OR Help our Prayer Shawl Ministry through donation!  Donate your leftover craft store coupons (place in drop box), money (designate ‘prayer shawl’ on your check or envelope) or skeins of yarn (3 identical skeins of Lion’s Brand Homespun is ideal, but we’ll take whatever you’ve got!).  There are designated wicker baskets in each building, ready to receive your yarn.

New Electronic Check-in for Children’s Ministry.  Registration for all congregations this weekend.  This only takes about 5 minutes, but please stop by the Registration Center (downstairs for Fusion/Celebration, Wave room for Watershed) to set up your PIN, fingerprints and barcode.   Watershed families who have previously registered may  check-in this weekend at Kiosks in the Anchor and LLPP .

Tulip Time Parade Fun • Ty will be out at the Tulip Time Parades [weather permitting] on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with free snacks and drinks!  Look for him in front of Kilwin’s Ice Cream near the fireplace across from JP’s.  Everyone is welcome to come by for a snack and drinks while they last.  This means students, parents and everyone else!

Function • There is a Function on Friday for all 7th and 8th graders!

242 is meeting Wednesday at the Anchor at 5:45 and going to Lost City Laser Tag!  Come have a great time with us and friends are welcome.  You can get a ride from the Anchor at 5:45 or meet us at Lost City at 6 pm.  We should be back to the Anchor by 8:30ish but will call when we are back.

Summer Host Families Needed: Host Families are needed for 25 students from Spain who are coming to the area June 28-July 26 in order to improve their already-good English and learn about American culture. They will be attending activities every Tuesday and Thursday (based in Hudsonville), but may also go on vacation or to summer camps with you. The program is flexible. You do not need to have teenagers to host. Other students are coming from Spain for 6 weeks and do not attend any activities. Teachers Needed in Central Africa:  Rain Forest International School (RFIS) (Cameroon) exists so that missionaries can fulfill their God-given tasks in Central Africa confident that their children’s educational needs are being met. However, in the coming school year, RFIS will find it particularly difficult to accomplish this goal as they are experiencing an extreme teacher shortage. Western Theological Seminary is seeking volunteers to serve breakfast at the Seminary, in downtown Holland, once every other month on Sunday mornings from 8:30-11:00. It would require a happy, serving heart, a smile on your face, and a helping hand! We set the tables, serve coffee, juice, bananas and baked goods, make eggs and sausage. You can feel free to mingle with the people who come for a warm breakfast if you desire. Vacuuming and cleaning will wrap it all up. Life Skills @ Harbor House:  Today, Lee Tanis is speaking at the services about her role leading life skills classes with the women residents of Harbor House, a live in treatment facility for women struggling with addiction.   A variety of women from Harderwyk have volunteered to lead a discussion or activities on their areas of interest and more are welcome!  Health, finance, relationships, faith, friends, family, hobbies, the ladies grow from activities and discussions about things that you enjoy.   Talk with Lee about ways you might encourage other women in our community.

Great Escape Junior Counselors:  Applications are available for young people going in to 9^th grade or higher who would like to assist at the Great Escape Summer Day Camp for a week this summer.  Junior Counselors assist the counselors leading games, crafts and activities on campus Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  for a week between June 18-August 20.  There is a mandatory training session held in May and weeks are assigned first come, first serve.  Contact Sherrie  for the Junior Counselor application.

Health Team Walking Group:  Walkers continue meeting every Monday at 11 am and 7 pm.  Come and enjoy fellowship as you add steps to your day.  The Walking Group will finish on May 14.   Soon the Health Team will begin planning some activities for the fall.  Contact Sherrie  or Dona Wheeler  if you have an idea you would like to share.

Home Care Locker:  The Locker continues to have many families coming monthly for a supply of toilet paper, soap, shampoo, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies.  All donations are welcome!  Thank you!

Summer Host Families Needed:  Host Families are needed for 25 students from Spain who are coming to the area June 28-July 26 in order to improve their already-good English and learn about American culture. They will be attending activities every Tuesday and Thursday (based in Hudsonville), but may also go on vacation or to summer camps with you. The program is flexible. You do not need to have teenagers to host. Other students are coming from Spain for 6 weeks and do not attend any activities. Harderwyk Picture Directory…Coming Soon! Pictures were submitted last fall for an updated picture directory. Harderwyk recently purchased a new database and  the office staff is diligently entering the information into our new system. As soon as we have completed the information transfer, we should be able to print a new and improved church directory.

Join a growing number of Christians who see that dismantling racism is essential to realizing God’s vision for gathering the nations and building peace in our community.  The Diversity Team of Classis Holland is offering a racial reconciliation D.O.R.R. Workshop.  It will be at Bravo CRC in Fennville on Saturday, April 21 from 8:30am – 4:00pm.  Facilitators will be George Davis, Socheth Na, and Viviana Cornejo.  $25 registration includes training materials, lunch, and refreshments.  Some scholarship funds are available upon request.  Register now by contacting Jeff Meyer .

Step into Spring Walking Group Begins Tomorrow:  Register today to begin a walking habit, Monday at 11 am or 7 pm meeting under the covered north entrance of the red brick building.  The group will spend 45 minutes stretching, learning and walking.  Walkers will receive a t shirt and a borrowed pedometer counting steps for the next 6 weeks.   Prizes will be awarded to the three walkers with the most steps.  Come join the fun.  Complete the registration form at the information center or email Dona to have a

Unique Worship Opportunity – Sunday evening in the Sanctuary, 6pm: Join Pastor Heidi and Tim and several gifted instrumentalists for a short worship service in the tradition of Taizé: Taizé is a small community in the hills of Burgundy in eastern France.  This worshiping community began in the 1940′s under the leadership of Brother Roger as an ecumenical community with a very Reformed flavor.  It has become the center for thousands of worshipers from all around the world, most of them young, who come there each summer.  Worship is the nourishing center of life at Taizé.  Brother Roger has written, “Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, at its high point, singing that never ends and that continues to the silence of one’s heart when one is alone again.”

Prayer Shawl Ministry: We will NOT meet tomorrow evening (which would be our regularly scheduled time to knit and pray together), due to the realities of Spring Break and Holy Week.  Please continue in your labors of love, and drop off any completed shawls or blankets with Pastor Heidi in the office, as the list of potential recipients keeps growing!

Parents of Adult Children Together (PACT): PACT is a prayer and support group for parents walking alongside adult children.  We meet for a good hour on the first Tuesdays of the month to celebrate joys and share burdens with one another.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 pm in the church library. South Olive Seniors are hosting two bus trips to Shipshewana this summer.  June 29, Friday, for the Breakfast Club.  We will hear Grand Caravan (Blackwood Bros., Chuckwagon Gang and Leveres.  Breakfast, concert,  lunch and bus ride is included.  Cost $55.00.   We will leave South Olive church at 6:00 a.m. and return around 5:00 Second trip is September 7, Friday, to the Musical – Half-stitched.  Book written by Wanda Brunstetter.  We will leave church at 8:15 a.m. and return around 6:00 p.m.

City on a Hill Praise Celebration. The Public is invited to our praise and celebration event Sunday, April 15, 2012 – 6pm @ Zeeland High East – DeWitt Auditorium.  The evening will focus on God and celebrate all He is doing at City on a Hill. There will be music, testimonies, scripture and prayers. An offering will be received for City on a Hill.  (No nursery provided. Children are welcome in the service.)

Free Electronics Recycling Collection At Providence Church (821 Ottawa Ave., Holland)  In cooperation with local e-Waste recycler Comprenew Environmental, a division of Worldwide Christian Schools, Providence Church is running a free electronics collection event Friday, April 13 to Sunday, April 15, 2012.  Please look for the Comprenew e-Drop Trailer in the church parking lot. Join us for some fun of Olympic proportions at the Bethany Christian Services Micro Olympics Family Celebration, Saturday, May 5.  There will be a variety of family friendly activities offering variations on summer Olympic events, including our legendary Micro Marathon.  In addition to the family activities and events, a lunch will be served (micro style), followed by a silent auction benefiting Bethany’s post -adoption program which provides services to families after the completion of their adoption. The event begins at 11:45 a.m. at Beechwood Reformed Church, 895 Ottawa Beach Rd in Holland.
Hope Rising Child Sponsorship:  ONLY 10 CHILDREN left (out of 63!) who currently need sponsorships to provide them with an education at Jerico Christian School in Batey Fao in the Dominican Republic.   Sponsorship cards (with pictures and information) are located the missionary display boards in both buildings.  Thanks to all of you who have decided to sponsor several of “our” children.
